Field of the Invention This invention relates to radio frequency identification systems. More particularly, this invention relates to radio frequency identification systems and methods employing adaptive frequency modulation techniques to enhance the quality of reading, writing, and transmitting data to and from tag transponders and readers in such systems. 2. Description of the Related Art Radio frequency identification (“RFID”) systems are becoming more prevalent for a wide variety of purposes. Such purposes include tracking assets, packaging and shipping of goods, automatic identification of personnel and objects, inventory management, and access control. An RFID system typically includes a reader device and a tag device. The reader device emits an interrogation signal which the tag device “interrogates.” Upon initiation of the interrogation, the tag device responds with a signal which may include the unique identification of the tag device. The reader device receives the identification signal from the tag device and passes the identification signal to a host computer or other processing circuitry for further processing. The interrogation signal is a form of electromagnetic energy, either in a continuous-wave or pulsed form. The interrogation signal may be transmitted by the reader device in a variety of ways. For example, the interrogation signal may be inductively coupled to the tag device. Alternately, the interrogation signal may be transmitted through the air using a form of transmission known as “far-field” electromagnetic energy. In such “far-field” systems, the interrogation signal is typically transmitted from an antenna. The tag device typically responds to the interrogation signal through the use of a transponder device. The transponder typically includes an inductive antenna, an electronic decoder for decoding and deriving the identification signal, and an RF transceiver device for encoding and receiving the identification signal from the reader device. The RF transceiver device of the tag device decodes the received identification signal, and generates a transmittable identification signal. The transponder may further include one or more data storage elements, such as a memory, which may be used to store data for the tag device.
